New Feenix Student Debt Bursaries South Africa 2022 – 2023

Feenix Students Funds Feenix was created in reaction to the #FeesMustFall movement that swept South African tertiary students in 2015 and 2016. Standard Bank is one of the original partners of Feenix, a Public Benefit Organization and crowdfunding platform.

Feenix aids students at public universities through three channels:
1. Crowdfunding: In order to raise funds for outstanding tuition fees, students post their personal stories on crowdfunding websites.
2. Bursary program: This is a scheme in which organizations grant funding to university students who have outstanding student debt.
3. Full student assistance: students receive holistic development support to ensure their success in university and the workplace.

ABOUT THE DFFE BURSARY PROGRAMME – FIELDS COVERED

Feenix is inviting students to apply for their 2 types of bursary programmes:

  • Feenix 2022 Graduate Bursary: is for students with outstanding student debt who completed undergraduate degree courses in Engineering, Data Science, Information Technology, Finance, and Commerce in 2019, 2020, or 2021.
  • Feenix 2022 Debt Bursary: is for students in their last year of undergraduate degree courses in Engineering, Data Science, Information Technology, and Finance who have outstanding student debt.

Feenix will provide partial or complete coverage for outstanding student debt/historic debt; the bursary will cover everything on the recipient’s fee statement, including tuition and housing costs.

Candidates will also get access to “Blackbullion South Africa,” a global award-winning financial literacy portal that offers entertaining and relevant education to help South Africans make better financial decisions before, during, and after university.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ABOUT THE FEENIX BURSARY PROGRAMME – SELECTION

Bursary awardees will be asked to produce progress reports for donor reporting reasons throughout the next 12 months (to determine if the candidate is continuing with their studies or has found employment).

Applicants who are considered for the Feenix Debt Bursary award must produce proof of degree completion by February 2023 before final selection. Successful candidates will receive bursaries in March 2023.

REQUIREMENTS FOR ELIGIBILITY FOR THE FEENIX BURSARY

Before applying, applicants must meet the following minimum entry criteria (please note that failure to meet all requirements will result in your application being rejected):
Graduate Bursary Feenix 2022:

  • You must be a citizen of South Africa.
  • You must be under the age of 35.
  • You must have earned an undergraduate degree in one of the following fields in 2019, 2020, or 2021:
  • Engineering, data science, information technology, finance, or commerce are all options.
  • You must have completed an undergraduate degree at one of South Africa’s 26 public universities (the
  • bursary will NOT cover postgraduate degrees or diplomas)
  • You must NOT have registered for any more studies in 2022.
  • You must have unpaid student loans.
  • You must aim to use your degree to get work.
  • You must have an annual household income of less than R600 000. (or less than R850 000 per annum, if
  • you have a disability)
  • The Feenix bursary terms and conditions must be read and agreed to.
  • Debt Bursary Feenix 2022:

 

  • You must be a citizen of South Africa.
  • You must be under the age of 35.
  • You must be pursuing an undergraduate degree in one of the following fields: Engineering, data science,
  • information technology, finance, or commerce are all options (the bursary will NOT cover postgraduate
  • degrees)
  • You must be in your final year of studies and expect to finish your undergraduate degree by December 2022.
  • You must be enrolled and studying at one of South Africa’s 26 public universities.
  • You must have current and/or historical student debt.
    You must have an annual household income of less than R600 000. (or less than R850 000 per annum, if you have a disability)
  • The Feenix bursary terms and conditions must be read and agreed to.

HOW TO APPLY FOR THE FEENIX BURSARY

Please provide clear copies of the following supporting material with your application (submission of these documents is mandatory; if any elements are missing, your application may be disqualified):
Feenix Graduate Scholarship:

Identification document or two sides of an ID card (certified copy, not older than 6 months)
Proof of degree completion in 2020 or 2021
If accessible, academic transcripts (on institutions letterhead)
Official fee statement (on institution letterhead/stamped, no older than 30 days) stating all outstanding debt (No registration proof or fee quotations will be accepted.)
ID number of parents/guardians/spouse in order to verify total family household income
Motivation letter has two main points: “How would you describe your own brand?” and “What makes your future worth investing in?” (1200 words limit) (Learn how to create a motivational letter for a bursary application.)
If you have a disability, a medical letter detailing the nature of your disability is required.

Debt Bursary Feenix:

Identification document or two sides of an ID card (certified copy, not older than 6 months)
Proof of enrollment in a public university for the academic year 2022 (on institutions letterhead)
If accessible, academic transcripts (on institutions letterhead)
Official fee statement (on institution letterhead/stamped, no older than 30 days) stating all outstanding debt (No registration proof or fee quotations will be accepted.)
ID number of parents/guardians/spouse in order to verify total family household income
